The level geometry was considerably more complex than I was expecting, and the few legitimately 3D objects like chairs and cameras surprised me. Especially after the first few levels, I felt that each level of the space station was unique and interesting and made me enthused to explore. Citadel Station felt very lived-in and internally consistent. There are distinguishable rooms, not just generic corridors. Unlike Doom, for instance, switches are next to the doors and elevators they activate or there's a camera feed showing what the switch does. The level design stuck out to me especially, being more akin to the realistic approach of Half-Life but with a lot less linearity. And I'll admit it took me a few hours to warm to this game and get really engaged with it but once I did, I was having a great time. In terms of shooters of the time, I'm familiar with Doom and similar early-mid 90s shooters so I went into this expecting similarly mazey levels with perhaps some slower gameplay and half-assed audiologs. I just finished System Shock 1 (specifically the Enhanced Edition) and I was rather blown away by it considering it came out in 1994. If only it weren't for that damn control scheme.
